Obituary for LAKE

Gerald Hunton Lake, 88 years young and a resident of New Mexico since 1921, died June 26, 2004. Gerald was born in Huntington, Arkansas on October 30, 1915; he was the son of Everett Gerald Lake and Lucille Hunton Lake of Belen, New Mexico. He married Edythe Augusta Scroggs on November 11, 1945 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife and daughters, Cheryl Wallerstedt and husband, David of Albuquerque, and Karen Henderson and husband, Butch of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Mary Catherine Boucher and Eleanor Love; and sister-in-law, Lucille Lake of Belen, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Eppa, Edgar and Phil Lake. They have seven grandchildren, Gerald Gene, who preceded him in death, Dawn and husband, Alan, Ryan, Rex, Jodi, Janna, and Rick; two great-grandchildren, Briana and Brendan Sandoval; and numerous nieces and nephews. He attended public schools in Belen, New Mexico. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Architecture in 1941. During World War II, he worked with the Army Corps of Engineers building army camps in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. He also redesigned luxury liners converting them into hospital ships in New Orleans where he met his wife. In 1950, he returned to New Mexico to begin employment with Ferguson, Stevens, and Decker, architects, assisting in the architectural design of the Bataan Lovelace Hospital. Later he worked for J.G. Meem of Santa Fe, as a consultant on the buildings on the UNM campus. In 1955, he partnered with John Kruger to establish the architectural engineering firm of Kruger, Lake and Henderson. The firm designed and engineered many New Mexico buildings such as the Glorietta Baptist Assembly Auditorium, First Baptist Church Addition, Gallup Rehoboth McKinley Hospital and many other New Mexico hospitals and churches, NMSU Dormitories, and the Baptist Student Unions. He was a long time member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church. He retired in the 80's and pursued family interest, church work, travel, fishing and gardening. He constantly amused his family and friends with his sense of humor and humorous stories. His love for God, church, family and friends was unsurpassed. A viewing will be held at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Tuesday, June 29, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 30th at First Baptist Church in Albuquerque.
