Obituary for MURRAY

James A. Murray, 61, a resident of Denver, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at his home surrounded by family. Jim was a loving father, grandfather, and friend who was both caring and intelligent. Known as a community member, scholar, and mentor, Jim was dedicated to public service and positively impacted many lives in the Denver-Boulder community. His enthusiasm for adventure and intellectual pursuits, kind heart, and courage are an inspiration to everyone he touched. His family and friends will remember him fondly. Jim is survived by son, Paul Murray; daughters, Heidi Filson and Kendra Murray; sister, Suzanne Phelan and grandson, Lars Filson. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1530 Logan St. in Denver. Jim was born October 2, 1942 in Evansville, Indiana to William Dewey and Dorothy Gleason Murray. The family later moved to Albuquerque, NM where Jim received a B.S. in Math and Physics at the University of New Mexico and married Vicki Young. Jim went on to receive his MBA from Harvard University and PhD in Economics from the University of Oregon. In 1972, Jim moved to Boulder, CO as Director of Finance for the City of Boulder. Later, he served as President for Briscoe, Maphis, Murray & Lamont, an urban and environmental consulting firm. In 1981, he was remarried to Amber Tootle, whom he later divorced. In 1982, Jim moved to Denver where he served as Director of Finance and Assistant to the Mayor for the City and County of Denver. After leaving the City in 1989, he became President and Director for Murray, Lamont, & Assocs., Inc. During Jim's retirement he was an avid hiker and outdoorsman, hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2000-2001. Other activities during his life included work with the Boulder Open Space Advisory Commission, Colorado Baseball Commission, the National AIA R/UDAT Task Group, and membership in several parks and environmental groups.
