Betty Jo Smith, 63, formerly of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, March 5, 2004 in Chesapeake, Virginia, where she lived the past two years to be near her daughter. She fought a courageous battle for four years with A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She was the daughter of the late Anastacio and Villa Lopez Martinez and worked for 16 years as an advertising layout designer for the Albuquerque Journal/Tribune before making her home in San Diego, CA for 16 years. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Robert "Bob" Smith; a daughter, Terry D. Erwin of Chesapeake, VA; a son, Steven Ruiz of Kenosha, WI; two stepsons, Steven Smith of Golden, CO and Robert Smith of Albuquerque; four grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Erwin and Kevin and Joshua Ruiz; a son-in-law, Brian Erwin; and three daughters-in-law, Susan Ruiz, Tina Smith and Lena Smith. She is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Ivey of Las Vegas, NV and the late Lorraine Martinez of Albuquerque; and four brothers, Clyde Martinez, Jerry Martinez, Rick Martinez and Bobby Martinez, all of Albuquerque. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 19, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
