Obituary for POWSNER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 14, 2004

Jennie Powsner, 93, a resident of Albuquerque for the past three years, died peacefully on Saturday, March 6, 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Alice Powsner of Albuquerque, and Cynthia Powsner, of Paris, France, and two grandchildren, Sachiel Slavin of Berkeley, California, and Nikiforos Tsimbidaros, of Paris. Her husband of 72 years, Isidore Powsner, passed away two years ago. Jennie was born in Brooklyn, New York. Since the early 1930s, she devoted her time and energy to promoting social and economic justice and world peace. She was active in the civil rights movement wherever she lived. An articulate conversationalist and debater, she challenged friends and neighbors to think about difficult issues of local, national, and international politics and the social environment. She was an artist whose work was exhibited in numerous art shows in New York State. Her recent paintings capture her enchantment with New Mexico's landscape, Flora, and Pueblo communities. After cremation, her remains will be taken to Kerhonkson, NY where she and her husband built their own home and where they lived for many years. A local memorial service will be announced soon.
