Obituary for SMETHURST

Alexis (Lexi) Smethurst passed away at home in the arms of her loving parents, Jane and Gary Smethurst, Friday, February 13, 2004. Lexi was 13 years old and was a child who deeply touched the hearts of those who came into her life. She was a sweet and loving soul, who lived through and with her disability with courage and spirit to achieve the simplest and yet most profound pleasures of her life. Lexi was surrounded by and graced with an extraordinary team of teachers, therapists, nurses, friends and medical staff. Their gifts to Lexi and the Smethurst family were remarkable and are held with immense gratitude. The family wishes to make a special acknowledgment of the devoted and tireless care provided by Dr. Sandra Whisler, M.D. Lexi is survived by her parents; sister, Christina; brothers, Aaron, Mark, Josh, Joey, and Ashston; grandparents, Mel and Alice Oberst; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A celebration of Lexi's life will be held Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 AM at Christ Unity Church, 9800 Candelaria (Eubank and Candelaria). A reception will follow at the church. Lexi's legacy will live on by continuing to help children with special needs. "Lexi's Playground" will provide a swingset adaptable to wheelchairs.
