Obituary for HANOLD

Katherine Borysko Hanold, 88, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2003. She was born in 1915 in Scranton, PA. In the 7th grade Katherine won the Wanamaker prize for art in a contest open to all 7th graders in greater New York City. Katherine took piano lessons, she and a close friend were invited to play two piano duets on radio station WQXR in Manhattan, NY. She attended a secretarial school and she graduated with honors. Her family physician encouraged Katherine to apply to the Bellevue School of Nursing in NYC. She graduated in 1937 and was appointed charge nurse in the Bellevue Hospital Emergency Ward, a fore-runner for a modern intensive care unit. In 1942 a Bellevue unit was organized to staff the 1st General Army Hospital, Katherine signed up as a Lieutenant. In basic training she was one of the few nurses selected to take a course in anesthesiology at Fort Dix primarily oriented to training MD's. 1st General Hospital operated just north of London in 1943-44 and in Paris 1944-45. On returning home she married Fred Hanold, a naval medical officer, in 1946 in Carmel, CA. On his separation from the Navy in 1947 they returned to New York where Dr. Hanold completed a residency at Bellevue Hospital, and Katherine was employed as a nurse in the infirmary of the Women's House of Detention. In 1950 they moved to Albuquerque where Dr. Hanold initiated a private practice. Katherine continued her interest in art including classes with Raymond Johnson at UNM. She also assisted a neighbor in translating texts into Braille format. Early on physician's wives were the "answering service" and Katherine was most adept at sorting true emergencies, urgent calls, and less urgent calls. She and Dr. Hanold were married for 58 years. Most importantly she was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Hanold; daughter, Lise; son, Stuart and wife, Liliana; two grandchildren, Jordan and Anakay; and brother, Dr. Emil Borysko. Private services will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Red Cross, Mid Rio Grande Chapter, 142 Monroe NE, 87108.
