Obituary for JOERGER

Rev. Jacob J. Joerger, O.P. Father was born in New Mexico a little over 80 years ago and passed away on January 1, 2004. He grew up in "Our Land Of Enchantment". As a young man, Jacob recognized his call to the priesthood and entered the Diocesan Seminary. In 1948 he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, which included much of the state of New Mexico. He served 12 years in pastoral positions, including nine years in Dixon, NM. In 1960, he received permission from his Archbishop to transfer to the Dominican Order. His first assignment was at St.Pius Parish, Chicago, IL, serving the growing Mexican community. Later ministeries were in Texas, New Mexico, Minneapolis and Vancouver, Canada. He was also one of the founders of the "Queen of the Americas" Guild. After a year of study in Rome, he served five years on the pastoral staff of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, particularly serving the English-speaking Pilgrims. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Verena Joerger; his brother, Oscar; his sisters, Pia Marie, Mary Casey and Carmen Wood. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Sadowski, Verena Urbigkiet and Columba Reid; several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were at St . Pius V Church in Chicago, IL on January 5, 2004.
