Obituary for BERRONG

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday January 23, 2004

Howard Bertin Berrong, community leader, engineer, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 21, 2004, at the age of 82, leaving memories of an exemplary life. He organized Boy Scout Troop 134 in Green Bay, WI, in 1958. In 1977, after retiring to Myrick Lake, WI, he organized the Webb Lake Men's Club in Swiss, WI, where he served as president for many years and was elected "Man of the Year" in 1990. After moving to Albuquerque in 1996, he volunteered as a teacher's aide in his daughter Judy Vavrek's third grade classroom at La Mesa Elementary School, teaching reading, arithmetic, and English language. Howard was born in Milwaukee, WI, on January 3, 1922, the son of Samuel and Elsie Anderson Berrong. He graduated as a chemical engineer in 1944 from Marquette University, and began working for Mobil Oil. After 33 years of working at jobs of increasing responsibility, he became a sales executive at Mobil headquarters in New York City and lived in Wilton, CT. His career was punctuated with many special awards and honors, including a U. S. patent. But he was especially proud of Pat (Mabelle), his wife of 60 years. For those who knew them, they were clearly soul mates. Pat continues to reside in Albuquerque. Pat and Howard had four children, Thomas (Lydia) of Angel Fire, NM, David (Midge) of Oviedo, FL, Dr. Judy (Michael) Vavrek, of Albuquerque, and Carol (Lynn) Slattery of Monroe, NC; and seven grandchildren, Mike, Mark (Jill), Eric (Danielle), and Jeremy (Leah) Berrong and Holly, Noelle, and Starr Vavrek. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday afternoon, January 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith in Christ Lutheran Church, at the corner of Indian School and Chelwood Park. Flowers may be sent to the church on Saturday. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or the American Diabetes Association.
