Cecil M. Freeby, 89, a longtime resident of Gallup, New Mexico, died in Albuquerque on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the age of 89. A native of Mankato, Kansas, he was born to John and Cecilia Barta Freeby on October 26, 1914. He first went to Gallup in 1936 to live with his sister, Mrs. Peggy Rooney. After serving in the Pacific Front during WWII, he returned to Gallup in 1945. There he met and married his wife of 57 years, Mary Catgenova, who passed away in April, 2003. Together they had three sons, Robert of Tacoma, WA, Richard of Albuquerque, NM and Roger of Denver, CO. He is also survived by his younger sister, Marjorie Wilson of Sweet Home, OR; four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Peggy, June and Fern; and brothers, William, Wyman, Jesse Leonard and Jimmy. Mr. Freeby had long been an active member of the Gallup Elks Club, the Principe Luigi Lodge, the VFW and DAV. He lived in Albuquerque, NM since October, 2001 where he had moved to be closer to his beloved wife, then a resident in a healthcare facility there. A Memorial Ceremony in his honor will be held at 10:00 a.m., January 17, 2004 at Albuquerque Grand Senior Apartments, 1501 Tijeras, NE.
