Obituary for WILLIAMS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday December 17, 2003

Gabe Williams, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 13, 2003. Gabe was 86 years old and had a rich life with his family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and students. Born on October 26, 1917, he was a member of the Oneida Indian Tribe of Wisconsin educated at Jones Academy, Oklahoma City University, and Tulsa University. Married on January 28, 1945 to Beulah R. Hook, he served three years in the Navy in World War II as a Torpedoman First Class, stationed at both New London, Connecticut and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Gabe and Beulah had three children, Julia, Daryl, and Ronald. Although his spirit is with them still, Beulah and his children and their families will miss him as he was the backbone of the family. Julia and her sons, Neil and Kyle, Daryl and his wife, Cathryn, and Ronald and his wife, Kathy and children, Andrea and Nathan all share memories of his wisdom, quiet strength, athletic abilities, and moral integrity. He retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1974, after serving for over 27 years as a professional educator: teacher, guidance counselor, coach, principal and education specialist in various locations throughout Indian Country (Nebraska, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona). Gabe was preceded in death by his mother; father; and three brothers. A man of intelligence, compassion, courage and dry humor, Gabe will be missed by all who he touched in this life. We celebrate his rest in the arms of the Lord and the care of the Angels, looking forward to the day when we are joined again in love and the light of the Creator. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 17, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Chapel of Sunrise, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE, with Funeral Service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Sunrise Funeral Options 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 (505)821-0010
