Obituary for MORITZ

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday November 13, 2003

Leon Dale Moritz, 80, suffering with Alzheimer's Disease for several years, passed from this life peacefully on November 11, 2003. The son of Walter and Florence Moritz of Stanton, Nebraska, he enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. As an Electronic Technician's Mate 1st Class, he was one of a handpicked group of personnel sent to White Sands Proving Grounds for training and preparation of the V-2 Rocket. The first of it's kind, the V-2 was launched from the large aircraft carrier, USS Midway, several hundred miles off the East Coast. In 1952, he met and married his jitterbug partner for life, Myrtle Pauline Stacks and the two moved to Albuquerque. He began employment at Sandia National Labs where he was affectionately known as "Grump" by many dear friends and peers. As a dedicated husband to Pauline and loving father to his daughter, Veda and his son, Steve, he retired from Sandia National Labs in 1985. He later became the proud grandfather of Steve's son, Kyle Moritz, the light of his life. He enjoyed working and his electronic skills kept him occupied in a shop at home repairing TV's and radios. Although each day Pops memory grew dimmer and faded away, we will always have the gift of his memory that can never be taken away. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Triva Evans of Houston, TX. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; children, Veda and Steven; grandson, Kyle; nieces and nephews, Susan and Brian Evans of Houston, TX; his brother, Mason and wife, Norma, and their sons, Jeff and Joel Moritz of Stanton, NE. In lieu of flowers, donations to Presbyterian Hospice and/or the Alzheimer's Association would be deeply appreciated. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, 2:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Funeral Home. A reception will follow the memorial service at the family home. Contributions can be made to Presbyterian Hospice, 8100 Constitution NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 or Alzheimer's Association-NM Chapter, 8100 Mountain NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
