William "Stewart" Fletcher 1913 - 2003 W. Stewart Fletcher, 90, of Cimarron, NM and Fullerton, CA, passed away peacefully of natural causes at home with family by his side on Thursday, October 9, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife and true love, Mickey. He is survived by his only cousin, Bert (Claudia) Roe; stepchildren, Phil (Viola) Beilin, Dodo (Sam) Standring, Esther Murray, and Marian (Stanley) Miller, his devoted Tom and Lydia (Tami) Maldonado; ten grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson, Cole; his brothers-in-law, Joseph Augustin (Vera) and Fred (Priscilla) Maldonado; and a large loving extended family. Born January 28, 1913, in Spruce, MO to Dr. James and Ester (Roe) Fletcher, he graduated from Drexel High School in 1931. After losing his father, the family moved to Santa Ana, CA where Stewart attended Santa Ana College. He received his BA in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley and attended Bolt School of Law. A Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, Stewart served our country for three years in New Caledonia and received the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Stewart began working for the US Post Office after Law School. He was a Postal Supervisor when he retired with 41 years of service in 1973. Many organizations and groups benefited from his leadership, altruism and hard work. He was President several times of The Santa Ana Isaac Walton League, The Santa Ana Toastmasters, Kiwanis and The Maverick Club of Cimarron and was active in both of his home communities. An avid outdoorsman, Stewart enjoyed camping, hiking with his grandchildren, his dogs, Rex or Max, deep sea fishing off California, fly fishing on the Cimarron River as well as shore, lake and stream fishing while vacationing in Bishop, Quincy and Baja California. He was known for his gardening and taking long leisurely drives. He loved having his family around, eating out, seeing movies, fine ice creams and sipping coffee with his friends. Stew will be fondly recalled relaxing with a Pepsi, munching nuts or Fritos. He never minded the often frequent family interruptions as he read late into the night in his recliner. Though Stewart was raised a Presbyterian, he was in his 60's before he became a Christian under the guidance of Reverend Joel Lamkin and joined the Cimarron Baptist Church. In the final weeks, deep faith and prayerful visits with his St. Joseph Hospice Chaplain gave him much comfort and peace. A lakeside memorial service was led in California by his nephew, The Reverend Fred Maldonado, Jr. A service with future date to be announced will be held in Cimarron. Final arrangements were provided by Accord Cremation and Burial Services, Brea, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Volunteer Ambulance Cimarron, NM 87714.
