Obituary for BUCKHOLTS

Walter. Cdr. Walter Howell Buckholts, Jr. USN (Ret), died on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 from complications due to cancer in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his wife Dona Lynn Buckholts of Albuquerque; his son, Walter Howell Buckholts, III and his wife Margarita (Peggy); grandson, William Christopher Buckholts; and granddaughter, Whitney Cari Buckholts of Dolores, Colorado; his daughter, Carrie Buckholts Belichick and her husband Frank and granddaughter, Hattie Mavis Belichick of Eagle Nest, New Mexico. Walter (Hal) was born on March 18, 1928 in Oklahoma City, OK. He grew up in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. He graduated from Waurika High School and went on to Central State College in Edmond Oklahoma. "Buck" was a career Naval Officer and Aviator with 27 years of service to his country. He joined the Navy in 1950 and earns his wings in 1952. He was stationed across the country and traveled the Pacific rim with squadron attachments to several carriers. He was an Instructor of Naval History at the University of Missouri, was with a helicopter squadron that flew search and rescue missions during the Viet Nam War and was an Intelligence Officer during the cold war. Buck retired to Albuquerque, NM in July of 1978. During his retirement, summers were spent in Colorado. Buck was an accomplished woodworker, fly-fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. He was a long time bonsai enthusiast and was active in the Albuquerque Bonsai Society. He also was active on The Albuquerque Council for International Visitors. Graveside services will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87110.
