Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday September 06, 1998

Edward Leroy Johnson, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, passed away on September 2, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Taylor Johnson, a well-known gardener, flower show exhibitor and judge. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Edward D. and Mayme Axelson Johnson of Burlington, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy; and a brother, Richard. He is survived by two sisters, Miriam Morley of Sacramento, CA and Roberta Hall of Fullerton, CA; three nephews and a niece. Locally, he is survived by his wife's niece, Ernestine (Tina) Clark and her husband, Elmer; and a nephew, James P. Roy and his wife, Jan, all of whom have been generous in their attention and support as he became more aged and infirm. Mr. Johnson was retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1973. He served as treasurer of the Council of Albuquerque Garden Clubs in 1974-75 when the Council was building the Albuquerque Garden Center. He was a member of the Albuquerque Rose Society since 1952 and served as president in 1973-74. He enjoyed his wife's interest in horticulture, her support of flower shows and her judging of local, state and national flower and rose shows. Laughingly he described himself as a"gardener by marriage." Cremation has been carried out by Sunrise Society. His ashes will be interred beside Ruth in the Riverside Cemetery, Loman, MN. Memorial services to be held at the Albuquerque Garden Center on Sunday, September 13 at 2:00 p.m.
