Joseph M. Smith Jr., 82, the third of five generations of Smith's in New Mexico and a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 1998. He is survived by his lovely wife of 53 years, Catherine of Albuquerque; son, Joseph M. Smith III, M.D. and his wife, Patricia of Santa Fe; daughter, Cairn Smith of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Leland, Dustin, Caitlin, and Mitchel. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Smith of Albuquerque; brother, A.W. Smith of Santa Rosa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Fannie Guy and Faye Hamilton; and brother, Earl Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of Masonic Liberty Lodge #51 A.F.&A.M. and was also active in the Scottish Rite. Mr. Smith was an avid sportsman and golfer. Services will be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m., at Santa Rosa United Methodist Church, 401 4th St., in Santa Rosa, with Rev. Ralph Valdez officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, also in Santa Rosa. Pallbearers will be David Smith, L.J. Smith, Dustin Smith, James Hamilton, Dennis Shiplit, and Jody Smith. Buster Dudrey will serve as honorary pallbearer.
