Obituary for Spelman

Ann Barclay Millen Spelman, 80, died April 3, 1998, in Albuquerque. She was born November 20, 1917 to W.H. and Katherine S. Millen in Amarillo, TX. She grew up in Montrose, CO and moved to Boise City, OK when she was 15. She earned her teaching degree with honors from West Texas State College in 1938. During World War II, she worked for CBS and Hughes Aircraft in California and later had a civilian job for the Army Air Force where she met her husband to be Lt. Col. George J. Spelman. They were married January 20, 1945 and celebrated their 35 wedding anniversary shortly before her beloved husband's death in 1981. She was a lifelong teacher. She taught English, drama, speech, literature, and Spanish at Boise City High School for many years, and she continued to read and learn all of her life. At eighty, she could still quote passages from MacBeth and she continued to read nearly every book on the New York Times best seller list. She loved her adopted state of New Mexico, especially enjoying the culture and timeless beauty of Santa Fe. Survivors include her children, Jeff Spelman, Edmond, OK, and Georganne Katherine Seeley, Albuquerque; and four grandchildren, Marisa Ann Spelman and Kerry Lauren Spelman of Edmond and Kyle Anthony and Katherine Ann Seeley of Albuquerque. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 10, 1998, 10:00 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Hillcrest Funeral Home, 225 San Mateo NE, 265-5959.
