Obituary for Tafoya

Teofilo Tafoya, 83, died Sunday, November 29, 1998 in Denver, CO. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace Tafoya of Lakewood, CO; son, Chet (Tafoya) Blue-Sky and wife, Gayle of Littleton, CO; granddaughter, Megan Blue-Sky; sisters, Angela Baca and husband, Tony, and Tonita Tafoya and husband, Paul, all of Santa Clara Pueblo; and many other loving family members. Mr. Tafoya received his B.A. degree in 1941 and M.A. in 1956 in Art Education from the University of New Mexico. He was a teacher and/or Art Director at the Albuquerque, Phoenix, Pine Ridge, SD, and Jemez Pueblo Indian Schools. Mr. Tafoya was a member of First Baptist Church and also a past member and board director of the All Faiths' Receiving Home. He was co-founder and chairman of the Council of American Indians; and a member of the 1st Executive Officers of United Nations Association. Mr. Tafoya was the vice-chairman and secretary of the All-Indian Pueblo Council and the co-founder of the Indian Village, O-We-Ga-Yea, at the New Mexico State Fair. He exhibited works of art at the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in Gallup, the Santa Fe Art Museum, the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C., and the Philbrook Art Museum in Tulsa, OK, and numerous private showings. Mr. Tafoya, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, had recently moved to Lakewood, CO. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 101 Broadway NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Pallbearers will be Walter Dasheno, Edwin Tafoya, John Garcia, Wayne Gardner, Mike Dillman, and Howard Curry. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Dailey, John Rainer, Ulysses Paisano, Joe L. Gutierrez, Charles (Chuck) Hinman, Joe Sando, Albert Naranjo, and Sam Lucero. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
