Obituary for Schiff

Congressman Steve Schiff, 51, a resident of Albuquerque since 1969, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; children, Jaimi and Daniel; mother, Helen Bjerke of Oceanside, CA; brothers, Maurice Schiff and wife, Sharon of West Hills, CA, and Gordon Schiff of Chicago, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Congressman Schiff received his B.A. in Political Science at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1968, and his J.D. at the University of New Mexico Law School in 1972. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1989. He served as District Attorney of Bernalillo County from 1981-1988; was Assistant Albuquerque City Attorney and Counsel for Albuquerque Police and Fire Departments 1979-1981; was a trial attorney in private practice; and previously was Assistant District Attorney of Bernalillo County 1972-1977. Congressman Schiff served in the NM Air National Guard over 20 years, and retired in 1997 as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was a member of Civitan International, the Fraternal Order of Police, was a former President of the Albuquerque Lodge of B'nai B'rith, and was a member of Congregation Albert for over 25 years. Services will be held Monday, March 30, 1998, at 10:00 a.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, with Rabbi Joseph R. Black officiating. Interment will follow at Congregation Albert Cemetery, Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale SE, Albuquerque, NM. The family will receive guests Monday, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE.
