Obituary for Clarke

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 2, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Albuquerque for Dr. Catherine M. Clarke, 90, a resident of Albuquerque. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m., Monday, at Woodbine Cemetery with Fr. Francis Renfro celebrating. Dr. Clarke died Thursday, February 26, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born in Artesia, November 28, 1908. She received an Associate of Music degree from St. Theresa's in Kansas City, MO in 1935. She received her Doctor of Dentistry degree from Loyola of the South in New Orleans, LA in 1940. She practiced briefly in Virginia before establishing a dental practice in Albuquerque with her late brother, Dr. Laurence Clarke. In addition to a private practice, Dr. Clarke also shared her dental talents with state agencies around the state. Dr. Clarke was National Director of the National Council of Catholic Women. She was also a papal honoree with the Pro Ecclesia el Pontifice presented to her by the then Archibishop Edwin V. Byrne of Santa Fe. Dr. Clarke is survived by one nephew, Thomas J. Clarke of Ventura, CA; four nieces, Mary Johnson of Independence, MO, Sarah Gnatkowski of Ancho, NM, Peg Clarke of Kansas City, MO, and Laurie Mann of Wichita, KS. She was preceded in death by her mother, Odile Grimmer Clarke in 1958; her father, Dr. J.J. Clarke Sr,in 1975; her brother, Dr. J.J. Clarke Jr. in 1967; and her brother, Dr. Laurence Clarke in 1993. Services are under the direction of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors of Albuquerque. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, PO Box 255555, Albuquerque, NM 87125. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1, 1998, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE. A Rosary will follow the Visitation at 7:00 p.m., also at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors.
