Obituary for Bates

Deacon Charles P. Bates. Age 83, died at his Santa Fe home on Thursday, December 24, 1999. Deacon Bates was born in DuQuoin, Illinois. He attended St. Henry Seminary, Delleville, Illinois. Our beloved Charles first came to New Mexico in 1951. He worked as an Administrative Assistant with the Soil conservation Service, as Administrative Officer and Executive Secretary of the Board of Civil Service Examiners, Federal Housing Administration and as Director of Personnel of the Bernalillo County Medical Center. He there developed and enduring fondness and great affection for the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. He was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate on March 16, 1976 at St. Joseph Hospital, Albuquerque, New Mexico by the Most Reverend Robert F. Sanchez, D.D. He was Director of Personnel at St. Joseph Hospital, until his retirement in 1981. He moved to Santa Fe in 1985 where he became the Deacon at St. Francis Cathedral. Deacon Bates was preceded in death by his parents Charles J. Bates and Mary C. (Grieb) Bates; his sisters, Marguerite Ponic and Sr. Winifred of the Notre Dame order of sisters. He is survived by his loving companion, Robert Durkin. He is also survived by his friends among the Sisters of Charity, The Franciscan Friars and many friends around the country. The Christmas season was the most special time of year for Charles and some believe that he was delighted to be with our Lord and Father on the anniversary of His birth. Arrangements by McGee Memorial Chapel. A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 26th at Saint Francis Cathedral, Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 27th also at the Cathedral. The Mass will be conducted by Archbishop Michael Sheehan.
