Obituary for Zolman

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday October 14, 1999

"Jim" James Michael Zolman, born February 16, 1954 in Albuquerque, passed away on October 11, 1999 at the age of 45. Twenty-seven years professional Rodeo Cowboy Association steer wrestler, Jim Zolman, broke the barrier one last time at St. Anthony's Hospital in Denver shortly after 5:00 p.m., Monday, October 11, 1999. Jim underwent knee surgery Wednesday, October 6th and lost consciousness early Thursday morning due to complications. He was placed on life support shortly after and was finally taken off on Monday the 11th. Those who knew Jim during this 30 plus year rodeo career watched him compete at a string of Little Britches, New Mexico Junior Rodeo, High School, and PRCA Rodeos. The Little Britches Rodeo Association honored Jim by establishing the"Jim Zolman Sportsmanship Award." While a national title eluded him in his journey, Jim captured the 1972 New Mexico High School Bulldogging Championship and then preceded to become a force on the professional circuit. Competing in rodeos from Madison Square Gardens in New York City to San Francisco's Cow Palace, he etched his name in the winner's circle at the Pendleton Round-up, the San Antonio Livestock Show, claimed the 1980 PRCA Turquoise Circuit Steerwrestling Title and was a familiar face at the pay window at many other rodeos across the nation. Jim's focus on life was to live each moment to the fullest and during his time here he touched and was touched by many, many friends. While it seems that he was taken early, he would say he had a great ride and would not have changed a minute of it. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Kathe; one daughter, Mandi Lane; two step-children, Heather and James; and granddaughters, Katherine and Caroline who called him"Taco"; brother, Ted; sisters, Loretta, Carol and Georgia; and hundreds of relatives and friends who will miss him, but are very thankful for the time that they were able to spend with him. Services will be held at Strong-Thorne Funeral Home in Albuquerque on Friday, the 15th of October. Viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with services at 2:00 p.m. Reception tentatively will follow at Bosque Farms Rodeo Arena. In lieu of flowers, Kathe suggests donations be made to the"Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund."
