Obituary for Zachary

Jesse C. Zachary Jr. passed away Saturday, November 20, 1999, at his home in Corrales at the age of 74. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; his three children, Katy and husband, Joe, Patty Wallace and husband, Hut Wallace, Bob Zachary and wife, Jeanne; brothers and sisters, Donald Zachary, James Zachary, Phillip Zachary, Richard Zachary, David Zachary, Ruth Bowers and Carol Sue Moore; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Zach graduated from Albuquerque High and served in the Air Force during WWII, flying combat missions in the European Theatre. He returned home to resume work building his lapidary business, Zachary's Turquoise. In intervening years, his interest in people and in turquoise took him around the world. The people he contacted through his business became lifelong friends and his international reputation grew until he was the noted"King of Turquoise." His turquoise collection is considered the best in the world and is now housed in the Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque. He and his collection have been written up in numerous publications, including New Mexico Magazine, Lapidary Journal, and recently, The Smithsonian. His hospitable and humorous spirit will be missed by us all. A visitation will be held Wednesday, November 24, 1999, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 26, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, with Joe P. Lowry officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Wallace, Zachary Wallace, Austin Zachary, Chris Clark, Vojko Banjac and Joe Dan Lowry. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Zachary, James Zachary, Richard Zachary, Phillip Zachary, David Moore and Wayne Bowers. Interment will follow in Sandia Memory Gardens. Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE, in charge of arrangements.
