Obituary for Goddard

Roy F. Goddard, M.D., 79, died February 5 in Cardiff, California. He is survived by his wife, Joann; three sons, Steve, Laurie, and George; his daughter, Mare; and six grandchildren. Roy was born in 1919 in Mesilla Park, New Mexico. His father, Ralph Goddard, professor of engineering, started KOB radio station at NMSU in the 1920's. Roy graduated from NMSU in 1940 and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, in 1949. He moved back to his beloved New Mexico in 1952 to practice pediatrics at the Lovelace Clinic. Roy will be remembered by his friends for his work with children; professionally he specialized in pediatric allergy and chest disease and practiced in Albuquerque for 32 years. He was a board member of the national Association of Pediatric Pulmonary Centers. He started the New Mexico Cystic Fibrosis Center and the Winrock Plaza Pediatric Pulmonary and Cystic Fibrosis Center. He invented and developed the Goddard Bennett Lovelace infant resuscitator. He served as President of the Bernalillo County Medical Association. He was very active in amateur sports. He directed many swim and water polo meets and served on the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Board; he helped found the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame, and was president of that organization. He served in the local and national AAU, and was Chairman of the National Sports Medicine Committee of the AAU from 1964-1974. He was presented with the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce award for One of America's 12 Physical Fitness Leaders by President Johnson in 1964. A private service will be held in California on Sunday, February 28.
