Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday September 11, 1999

Margaret Johnson Tilton, 77, a resident of Sandia Park for 51 years, passed away on September 9, 1999, at home surrounded by her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Billy; adoring daughters; Mary Elizabeth Tilton, Malinda Tilton Dempsey and husband, Frank Dempsey; grandchildren; Kirk Grubbs, Matthew Grubbs, Christopher Dempsey, Aaron Dempsey, Dacia Dempsey and Cory Dempsey all of Sandia Park; and great granddaughter, Alyssia Seidel of Albuquerque. She also leaves her sister and best friend, Charlotte Toulouse and husband, James Toulouse; sister-in-law, Betty Johnson; and brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Blanche Tilton; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her human family she leaves Geri, Lucky, Morris, Bandit, Garfield and Mom. She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Charlotte Smith Johnson; her son, Corwin Tilton; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Olgilvie; and her brother, John Johnson. Margie was born in Newton, Kansas, and came to New Mexico after graduating from Topeka High School. She moved to the mountains as a young bride where she and Billy ran Tiltons Store and the US Post Office for 30 years. She raised a family, cared for a community and served hundreds of sandwiches and gallons of coffee to those fighting forest fires through the years. Margie loved music with a special fondness for opera and hymns. No stray dog or cat went homeless or hungry anywhere near Margie and Billy and this love for all God's creatures was passed on to her daughters and grandchildren. Although we take joy in her life, a huge hole is now left in the lives of her loving family and friends. In accordance with her wishes, she has been cremated with no services. She requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 5810 Lomas NE, 87110, The American Diabetic Assn., 525 San Pedro NE, 87108 or the Animal Humane Assn. of New Mexico, 615 Virginia ST. SE, 87108.
