S.R. Denzler, MD, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died at home early Friday, September 3, 1999. He is survived by one brother, Charles Denzler of Washington State; daughters, Patricia A. Vanderberg and husband, Dr. Richard Vanderberg of Edmonton, Canada and Mary Jo Denzler of Los Lunas; son, David W.R. Denzler and wife, Caroline of Highland, MD; God-daughter, Charlene Wardlow of Santa Rosa, CA; grandchildren, Debbie Hughes of Los Lunas, John E. Hughes III of Albuquerque, and Ian Vanderberg and wife, Rebecca of Halifax, Nova Scotia; great-grandchildren, Amber Jones and Kody Hudspeth; and many family and friends. Dr. Denzler was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary L. Denzler; four sisters; and one brother. He lived a full and interesting life. Dr. Denzler loved being a general practitioner and always said,"We did it all." In his long career, he delivered over 1,000 babies and place many children in loving homes. Born in Jeffersonville, IN, Russ attended college and medical school at Indiana University, where he met Mary. He interned in New Orleans, LA and practiced medicine in Washington State, Houston, Texas, and he owned and operated a hospital in Cañon City, CO. Mr. Denzler was chief physician for Kennecott Copper Corp., New Mexico, before he entered the military. He was a Major in charge of the Eta Jima, Japan base hospital. After his military service, Russ and Mary settled in Albuquerque in 1955. Dr. Denzler joined the staff of Lovelace Clinic, established a private practice, and worked in the emergency room of the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital. He remained in private practice at the office he built on Dartmouth SE until semi-retirement in the early 1970s. For the next decade, Dr. Denzler was medical director of Ridgecrest Nursing Home, and he did Medicare Review at Lovelace Clinic, as well as other medically related tasks. Russ and Mary traveled the globe privately and with the Friendship Force for many decades. He was a 50-year Mason and a member of Temple Lodge #6 AF&AM and an active member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine. Dr. Denzler was president of the Nomads Camping Club and Wagon Master at locations throughout the southwest. In later years, he was very active in the Caravan Club. Since the late 1950s, Russ and Mary were active and loyal members of Central United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 11, 1999, 2:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, with Reverend Martha A. Singleterry and Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Family would prefer memorial contributions be made to Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper NE 87106 and the Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni SE 87108, or a charity of your choice.
