Obituary for Hickam

Ralph Hickam passed away August 9, 1999. He was born September 8, 1908 in Hawley, Texas to Fannie and Marion Hickam. Ralph moved to New Mexico in 1944. In his early years, Ralph was a farmer on the plains of West Texas. He gave up farming for a living in 1948 and joined the Iron Workers Union Local #495. He worked in Alaska and Kentucky, also on the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge near Taos; however, he worked most of the time in the Farmington area at the power plants. Ralph retired in 1975 to his home in Bernalillo, where he spent most of his time in his garden. He also loved to dance, hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by the mother of his five children, Lucy E. Hickam; his mother and father; and sister, Christine Cantrell. He is survived by his two sons, Earl Hickam and wife, Opal of Bloomfield, NM, Marshall Hickam and wife, Marilyn of Lubbock, TX; three daughters, Pearl Parker of Bloomfield, NM, Arleen Netcher of Clovis, NM, Gladys Masters of Farmington; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Watts of Hereford, TX; a cousin, J.B. Quillen of Clovis, NM; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends in the Farmington, Chama, Albuquerque and Bernalillo areas. He also leaves behind two very Dear Friends, Mae Ware and Louise Davenport. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., today, at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care. Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 1999 at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care and conducted by Roy Dale Kuykendall. Interment will follow in Sandia Memory Gardens, 9500 San Pedro NE. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, James Netcher Jr., Raymond Netcher, Ralph Masters, Charlie Tallman, Dave DeTemple, Chris Dugas and Jerry Hurd. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Williams, Frank Trujillo, Greg Lea Sr., James Netcher Sr., Sonny Hickam, Wilton Cantrell and Jim Ray.
