Obituary for Bunts

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday June 29, 1999

Sue Bynum Bunts, born October 12, 1921 in Brownfield, TX, succumbed to Alzheimer's disease on June 26, 1999. Sue was the descendent of pioneers to Texas from Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Preceding her in death were her parents, Arnett and Lucile (Treadaway) Bynum and her husband, Rev. J.R. Bunts. Sue accompanied J.R. to his various assignments at Methodist Churches throughout New Mexico and West Texas. Her home of heart was El Paso, and she settled there in 1971. Sue graduated from McMurry College in Abilene, TX, at the age of 19. During her life she was a mother and homemaker, a high school English teacher, and in her 50's she became a registered nurse. Sue had a wonderful sense of humor and always liked a good joke. In 1991, she came to live with her daughter, Kathy, in Tijeras. She loved the beautiful mountain setting and would find excitement in the first snow of the season, the first buds on the oak trees in the spring, and the blooming of her Desert Roses in the summer. For the last year and a half, Sue had resided at The Cottages of Albuquerque. The care she received there was loving and compassionate, and the family feels the deepest gratitude toward all the staff. Sue has left many people to mourn her passing, including her six children and their spouses, Tony and Gale Bunts of Tucson, Tim and Mary Bunts of El Paso, Kathy Bunts and Michael Cook of Tijeras, Paul Bunts of Tijeras, Leesa Bunts of Rodeo, and Joy and Colm Matthews of Albuquerque; her sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Audrey Knox of San Angelo, TX; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. Sue will be buried during a private family ceremony next to her husband, J.R. in El Paso. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sue's name to the Alzheimer's Association - New Mexico Chapter, 1330 San Pedro Drive NE, Suite 205, Albuquerque, NM 87110, to help stop the ravages of this horrendous disease. Arrangements provided by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. We have suffered through "The Long Goodbye" because of Alzheimer's. "In the arms of the angels, Fly away from here.... We are far from the wreckage of your silent reverie, You're in the arms of the angels, May you find some comfort here." Goodbye, Sweet Mama
