Obituary for Handy

Nathaniel A. Handy passed away Sunday evening, 6/20/99, in his home in Paradise Hills. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his son, Alex of San Diego, CA, his son, Stuart of Santa Barbara, CA; and his brother, Peter of Woodside, CA. He was born in Needham, Massachusetts, 12/30/46, of Violet Pilkington Handy and Nathaniel A. Handy, DMD. His father was among the first African Americans to graduate from Harvard Medical School in the 1930s. Nat's wife, Elaine will continue to run WordCenter, Inc., a word processing, desktop publishing and medical transcription service, which they founded together in 1981. Nat served eight years on the Board of the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence, and was the first man to be President of the Board. He served two terms on the Board of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Albuquerque, four years on the Board of Hospice/Home Care, three years on the State Transportation Committee, and four years on the Board of Explora Science Center and Children's Museum. He coached two women's soccer teams, one of them for over 13 years. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Nat's life and contribution to our community on Thursday evening 6/24/99 at 5:30 p.m. at Paradise Hills Park (5801 Paradise Blvd. NW). It will be an informal occasion and anyone who wishes will be able to share how Nat touched their lives.
