Obituary for Hume

William Hume II, of Socorro, died Monday in Albuquerque after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Oxford, Mississippi. He moved to Albuquerque in 1935 to join the faculty of the University of New Mexico. He moved to Socorro in 1949, where he served on the faculty of New Mexico Tech as professor of physics, dean of the college and assistant to the president until his retirement in 1975. He was preceded in death by his wife Anafred Stephenson Hume, who died in 1969, and grandson Robert Branham Hume, the son of Robert B. and Kathleen Hume. He is survived by his sister Mary Hume Kelton, daughter Ann Hume Taulbee and her children Lisa Kay Taulbee, Carol Lynn Taulbee and husband Bart Stucky and Karen Taulbee Flores and husband Mikel; son William C. Hume and wife Elizabeth G., and their children William A. Hume and Elizabeth A. Hume; son Robert B. Hume and wife Kathleen, their son Phillip Bainard Hume; daughter Jane Hume Anderson and her children William Theodore Anderson and Amy Kay Anderson; daughter Mary Hume Melia and sons John M. Melia and Matthew M. Melia. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert B. Stephenson and wife Mary Ann, and their children William Craig Stephenson and Ann Stephenson Cortes and husband Rodolfo and their daughter Daisy. Private memorial services are being planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, New Mexico Tech, or the charity of your choice.
