Obituary for Matthews

John S. Matthews, 85, a resident of Albuquerque for 67 years, passed away Monday, June 7, 1999 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Muriel Thelin Matthews of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque; daughters, Linda Strong and husband, David Brighton of Santa Fe and Leone Matthews and husband, Stephen Jones of Placitas; son, Jack S. Stamm of Santa Fe; grandsons, Lars Strong of Santa Fe and Charlie Jones of Placitas; granddaughter, Kare Strong of Tucson, AZ, Alexis Jones and Hayley Jones, both of Placitas; great-granddaughters, Lily and Rhea Strong of Santa Fe; nieces, Dorothy Beebe and Dr. Kate Matthews-Ha, both of Forrestville, CA, and Carol Bonda and husband, Ray of Albuquerque; nephew, Richard Thelin of Albuquerque; and cousin, Shirley Kemper and husband, Jack of Albuquerque. Mr. Matthews graduated from the University of New Mexico and attended Harvard in conjunction with his service as Communications Officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Matthews was the founder and President of Security Federal Savings & Loan, retiring in 1980. He was also involved with the Nature Conservancy. Mr. Matthews loved ranch life and raised registered Black Angus cattle in Bernalillo and Abiquiu as an avocation. Services will be held Thursday, 4:00 p.m., at The Cathedral Church of St. John, 4th Street at Silver SW, with The Very Rev. John B. Haverland, Dean Emeritus, officiating. A reception will follow. Entombment will take place, Friday, June 11, 1999, 10:30 a.m., at Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Thursday, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
