Obituary for Negri

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 03, 1999

With great sadness, Mrs. Nerino Negri announced the death of her beloved husband, Nerino Negri, on January 1, 1999 in Rio Rancho, NM. Mr. Negri, noted tenor of opera and concert, was born September 29, 1912 in Bologna, Italy. He began a distinguished career as a boy soprano in the children's chorus of that city's Teatro Comunale, and in the Cathedral and numerous churches in and around Bologna. He was engaged by Rai-Air in Torino for the Chorus, and his own weekly program of arias and concert classics. Moving to Milano to sing at La Scala during the war years, he toured up and down Italy and Malta. He sang and acted as manager with several touring companies in Switzerland, Portugal and Egypt. In 1950, he sailed with a small Italian company for Peru for a three-month engagement, and remained in South America for ten years. There he enjoyed a reputation as a versatile artist, appearing on radio programs, in opera and oratorio, and as a guest soloist with many orchestras. He made a number of recordings, and with his Trio Falconieri, sang in a number of popular nightclubs of the day. In 1960, he came to the USA, where several concerts in San Diego led him to a San Francisco Opera engagement, nearly 20 years, where he met his mezzo-soprano wife, the former Maria West. They lived in New York City, singing in duo and solo concerts, a tour of Puerto Rico with T.V. concerts. Mr. Negri sang with the Philadelphia, Newark, Brooklyn and New York City Opera Companies and many other companies in Venezuela. A tenor soloist at St. Patrick's Cathedral for nearly ten years, Mr. Negri was also highly regarded as a teacher of singing and interpreter of the Puccini tradition. He and Mrs. Negri traveled extensively, setting in Rio Rancho in 1997. Mr. Negri dedicated his life to music. In both, he was meticulous in preparation and performance. A man or integrity and compassion, he was a true Bolognese in his generosity and zest for life. Funeral Services will be conducted by Rio Rancho Funeral Home, with a Funeral Mass in Albuquerque's Mt. Calvary Cemetery Chapel on Monday, January 4th at 2:00 p.m. with Interment immediately following.
