Obituary for Atchley

Forrest S. Atchley, age 89, of Clayton, New Mexico, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in Amarillo, TX. Born in Carmen, Oklahoma on August 12, 1909, he married Ruby Edna Smith on May 27, 1934 in Las Vegas, NM and she preceded him in death on June 11, 1991. He is survived by one son, Wayne Atchley of Amarillo; four daughters, Violet Brockman of Clayton, DeAnna Richardson and Elaine Aschbacher, both of Sedan, NM, and Teena Atchley of Odessa, TX; one sister, Genevieve Dillon of Albuquerque; and two brothers, Gene Atchley of Clayton and John Atchley of Portales; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His concern for his country led him to serve three terms in the NM Legislature and to be his party's choice for both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He was also chosen to be a delegate to the Republican National Convention, where he met personally with Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 27, at the First Baptist Church in Clayton. Burial will be in the Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors.
