Obituary for Towne

Lt. Col. Maurice H. Towne Jr., (U.S.A.R.-Ret.), 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1965, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 1999. He is survived by his sons, Maurice H. Towne III and Michael R. Towne, both of Albuquerque. He was an accomplished and distinguished CIC career officer. He served in a wide range of sensitive capacities, and on special assignments in the South Pacific during WWII. As a gifted linguist, he went on to serve with the Turkish Brigade in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He completed his military career with tours of duty in Alaska, at the Pentagon, and finally as Commanding Officer of the 901st Intelligence Detachment, then headquartered at what is now Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. He retired from active duty in 1966. As a civilian, he worked with the E.G.&G. Corporation in Albuquerque as Chief of Security and Safety Officer before accepting a position as Senior Buyer and Chief of Security with Ross Aviation in 1976. He retired in 1992. He was an active and passionate outdoorsman, faithful friend, and cherished companion. As a man, he was a devoted father, teacher, and a distinguished officer and gentleman. For his friends, his passing leaves great emptiness, but his memory leaves us with profound respect and admiration. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, 6:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Chaplain First Lt. Henry D. McCain officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made in the name of Maurice H. Towne Jr., a founding member, to the N.R.A.
