Obituary for Gevelhoff

Dr. Hans Joachim Gevelhoff, 70, born in Magdeburg, Germany and a resident of Albuquerque since 1971, died Sunday, April 11, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Florence Gevelhoff of the family home; daughter, Heidi Sparacino and husband, Dan of Albuquerque; sons, Hans Gevelhoff Jr. and wife, Karen, and Karl Gevelhoff and fiancee, Genia, all of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Hanson and Courtney; brother, Rolf Bocker and wife, Gaby and their daughter, Katerina of Germany; and many lifelong friends. Dr. Gevelhoff had a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering, which he received from the Aachen Institute of Technology in Germany. He was recruited by the US Army to work on the development of rocket and space propulsion systems at White Sands Missile Range. It was there that he met his wife, Florence, who was a technical librarian. Dr. Gevelhoff was one of the last German scientists brought in under Project Paperclip, a project that enticed some of Germany's finest minds to come to America. He later worked at Hollomon AFB before transferring to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. He loved his family, fishing, photography and woodworking. Dr. Gevelhoff was an accomplished musician who played the piano, accordian, and harmonica. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 14, 1999, 2:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating.
