Obituary for Mead

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 23, 2000

Santa Fe lost an icon on Wednesday, January 12, 2000, with the death of Mary Elizabeth Mead at the age of 98. When not functioning as the Scourge of Trash on the Plaza, she served variously as the secretary of League of Women Voters and the Santa Fe Historical Society. She was named an honorary life member of the Santa Fe Archeological Society and was a docent for the Wheelwright Museum and the School for American Research. After her career with the Marcy C. Wheeler School in Providence, RI, and the Ethel Walker School in Simbury, CT, she retired to Santa Fe to be with her sister's family, Pauline and Pat Patraw, longtime residents of Santa Fe. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa, Santa Fe, 984-8600. www.berardinelli-mortuary.com
