Frank Gilbert Atkin. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2000 at the First United Methodist Church for Frank Gilbert"Gil" Atkin, age 65, of Roswell, who passed away September 9, 2000, due to construction accident, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Rev. Steve Chappell of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service. Interment will be a later date among the live oaks and wild flowers at the Blue Mountain Cemetery in Woody, California, in the foothills where his ancestors settled northeast of Bakersfield. Gil was born January 24, 1935 in Porterville, California to Frank Ellis and Ardis Clare Buffington Atkin. He was the descendent of California's pioneering '49er families. Both parents preceded him in death. He married Gail Elaine Smith on September 27, 1953 in Porterville, California, and they shred nearly 47 happy years together. She survives him at the family home at 6276 Old Clovis Hwy, Roswell, New Mexico 88201. Other survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Smith and her husband, Ed of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and Susan McGee and her husband, Danny of Los Angeles, California. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Smith of Rio Rancho and Julia and Jennifer McGee of Los Angeles. He loved opera, painting, animals, wrestling with his grandchildren, and his wife's good cooking. He gave quietly to those in need. Friends may make memorials in Gil's memory to the Cowboy Bell Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church in Roswell or to a charity of their choice. Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
