Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday April 03, 2000

Douglas E. Murphy was born on September 25, 1926, in Milford, Utah to Edith (Teen) Rowley Murphy and Douglas Murphy. Doug joined the Navy during WWII and served from May 4, 1944 to September 3, 1947. He started in submarine training then switched to surface vessels in the South Pacific. After the Navy, he worked at the Blue Angel (NYC), then attended Arizona State, Utah State, sold magazines, became a husband and father, and worked for Utah Parks Co. Change took him again to hotels and restaurants, including opening and managing luxury sites in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Clines Corners didn't need a motel, but Doug stayed to run the retail operation until his retirement. Doug died March 29, 2000, from cancer. He leaves his wife of 21 years, Joyce Benfell-Murphy; daughter, Dee; son, Doug; seven grandchildren; three step-daughters; and one step-son. Doug was a member of Hiram Lodge, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, was a Past Director of R.O.O.J., and a Past Exalted Ruler B.O.O.E. He was a long-time fixed-wing pilot, a hot air balloon pilot, and member of Shrine Aeronauts. Doug had many friends in all walks of life and will be much missed by family and friends, far and near.
