Obituary for Ferris

Dorothy N. Ferris passed away on May 22, 2000. She was born in Jenkins (Crossroads), New Mexico on November 7, 1912 to Ross and Martha Norton. The family moved to Wellman, Texas, where she went to school. After graduating in 1930, she returned to New Mexico for good. On June 3, 1932, she married Charlie Ferris. They spent 61 years together before Charlie died in 1993. They lived in Lincoln, Ft. Stanton, and Capitan until 1954, when they moved to Tularosa and opened a Tastee Freez, which they ran until they retired in 1974. Dorothy moved from Tularosa to Edgewood in 1997. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Martha Norton; a brother, Gene Norton (1941); and a son, Gary (1964). She is survived by a brother, Charles Norton of San Antonio, TX; a son, Charles Melvyn Ferris and his wife, Sandra of Edgewood; two grandchildren, Anna Ferris of Albuquerque and Mike and his wife, Sharon of Longmont, CO; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Whitney Ferris of Longmont, CO. Dorothy is also survived by a very special adopted family, Kay Hawkins and daughter, Lauree of Phoenix, AZ. Dorothy was always very active. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Carrizozo, NM, and a member of the Woman's Club in both Capitan and Tularosa. The Senior Citizens groups in Tularosa and Edgewood were very important to her. Dorothy loved gardening, knitting, and crocheting. She loved to play cards and dominoes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Older American Center, 1050 Bookout Lane, in Tularosa. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2000 at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home in Alamogordo.
