Obituary for Merchant

Richard Franklin Merchant, 76, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2000. Richard was born January 3, 1924, the son of William and Hattie Merchant in Denver, Colorado. He had worked as a design prototype maker for Minneapolis Honeywell, and then owned Paramount Lanes in the Denver area. In the early 1940's, he had worked at Los Alamos and MIT. In retirement, he was a fine craft woodworker and cabinetmaker. He will be remembered by all who know him for his dry wit and keen sense of humor. Richard and his wife, Jessica moved to New Mexico in 1979. He was preceded in death by his wife. Richard is survived by one sister, Arlene Merchant Hilker; and nephew, Richard Hilker of Arizona and a step-daughter, Jo McGlone of Albuquerque; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. A memorial celebration will be held in the Rose Garden of Vista Verde Memorial Park in Rio Rancho at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2000. In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions to be made in memory of Jessica and Richard Merchant to the KNME endowment at the Albuquerque Community Foundation.
