Obituary for Cunico

Mike R. Cunico, age 91, died on April 10, at Miners Colfax Medical Center. He was born on January 11, 1909 in Raton, the son of the late Joe and Marcolina (Rigoni) Cunico. Mike was a Raton resident since 1971, prior to that he was a rancher and a self employed welder in Kiowa. His family were original homesteaders and longtime ranchers in the Kiowa area. Mike was an avid arrowhead hunter and loved walking the countryside with his friends looking for Indian artifacts. He may never walk this way again, but he will never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by sisters, Josephine, Edith, Toni, Rena; and brother, Joe Cunico. Survivors include wife of 68 years, Vallie Cunico of the family home in Raton; daughter, Shirley Cunico Hooper and husband, Chuck of Cimarron; sons, Donald E. Cunico and wife, Shirley of Alamogordo, John J. Cunico and wife, Georgia of Albuquerque, Gerald L. Cunico and wife, Karen of Kremling, CO; sisters, Mary Rigoni, Eva Hardgrove and Janie Scott; grandsons, Dean, Mike, Shane, Jeff, Brad Cunico and Mike Gardiner; granddaughters, Terrie Rienke, LaDonna Maxwell, Carrie Craig, Kathy Reece, Kaycee and Kara Hooper; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2:00 p.m., at the First Christian Church with Rev. Jack Walton officiating. Interment will follow in Farmington Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements for Mike R. Cunico are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.
