Obituary for Gonzales

Leona Fresquez Gonzales, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother has gone to be with our Lord on Friday, February 11, 2000 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born on June 231, 1918 to Fidel and Emilina Fresquez in Taos, NM. At three months old she lost both her parents to influenza and lived with her grandparents for eight years and then came to live with her foster Mother, Helen Davis Baca in Albuquerque, NM. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1936. Leona married Eloy P. Gonzales on December 12, 1937 and they spent most of their lives in Mountainair and Estancia, NM, where they raised six children. She is survived by four daughters and son-in-law, Mary Helen Miranda of Mountainair, NM, Marian and Lorenzo Bernal of Estancia, NM, Christine Jantz of Estancia, and Victoria Gonzales of Clovis, NM; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Eloy Joe and Catherine Gonzales of Albuquerque, NM and Richard and Clorinda Gonzales of Estancia, NM; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eloy; her in-laws, Juan and Delfina Gonzales and three grandsons, Larry, Eddie and Raymond Miranda. At the age of fifty-two she went to work at the Estancia Public Schools. The first five years as a teachers aid, and then as a cafeteria cashier for fifteen years, and retired at the age of seventy-two. She loved her job and boss, Stanley Newton. Leona was talented in many crafts, cooking, baking, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and bead work. She was a great teacher and was always willing to teach anyone who wanted to learn. She loved her flowers and had a beautiful flower garden every summer. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. also at the Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 14, 2000, 10:00 a.m. at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Daniel Balizan officiating. Burial will follow in the Estancia Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lucinda Lopez, Yvette Bernal, Sonya Weisbrot, Lorenzo Bernal, Juan Fidel Jantz, Heather Ann Jantz, and Lisa Marie Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be Tina Bradshaw, George Miranda, Annette Miranda and Adam Chavez. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, NM.
