Obituary for Widger

Louis T. Widger, 81, a resident of the Socorro, NM area since 1946, died Saturday, February 5, 2000. He was born in Salem, NJ on September 4, 1918 to William H. and Martha A. (Tetaz) Widger Jr. He graduated from Salem High School in 1936 where he was President of his Senior class. In 1939 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed at Randolph Field Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX during WWII. He achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant. Louis met and married Alma Lorraine Hediger on July 3, 1943. Louis, Lorraine and their daughter, Paula moved to Bingham, NM in 1946. In 1952 they moved to Socorro. Louis retired from Santa Fe Freight Lines and he and his wife owned and operated Widger's Laundromat in Socorro for many years. Louis helped in organizing youth activities such as Little League Football, basketball and the Socorro Swim Team. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Socorro Senior Village. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine of their home; daughter, Paula Mertz and husband, Neil of Socorro; son, Chuck Widger and wife, Debbie of Las Cruces, NM; brothers, Bill and George Widger of Pennsville, NJ; sister, Betty Towler of Seminole, FL; grandchildren, Brian and Andrea Mertz; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Monday, February 7, 2000 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Steadman-Hall Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Socorro with Rev. Carl Russell officiating. Interment will be in the Socorro Cemetery with Socorro DAV and VFW providing military honors. Pallbearers are: Will Orndorff, William Wrye, Roy Carrejo, Chuck Monette, Al Porte Sr. Marsh Iftner, Carl Dotson and Manny Marquez. Honorary pallbearers are: Holm Bursum III and Floyd Smith. Family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Socorro Public Library, 401 Park St., Socorro, NM 87801 or the New Mexico Boys Ranch, Boys Ranch, NM 87002.
