Obituary for Shoemaker

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 31, 2000

Searle, Zena Shoemaker, loving Grandma, passed away on December 27, 2000 at her daughter's home in Gilbert, AZ after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in England, a resident of Albuquerque, she lived to enjoy the outdoors and travel with her devoted husband, Jerry. Her joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Keagan, Ryan and Alyssa going on long walks to the park to feed the ducks, while at the same time completing her degree at the University of New Mexico. She enjoyed Arizona visits and being close to her daughter, Brandi and son-in-law, Rick. Zena was an accomplished athlete. She participated in national fencing, softball, and Senior Olympics basketball. She is preceded in death by her brother, Fred Baca, and dear friend, Dan Shoemaker. She is survived by her immediate family, Randy and Teresa Baca, Maurice and Val Rushman, Ben and Aida Baca, Johnny and Rose Baca, and Marlena Melendez; her nieces and nephews are Jared, Joel, and Jennifer Baca, Eli, Jason, and Tiffany Baca, Brandon and Deidra Baca, and Aaron Melendez; and many many friends and relatives. We are proud of the way she touched each of our lives in her different roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. We thank everyone for their prayers and support. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Arizona 2222 W. Northern Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85021, for their support in helping Zena peacefully begin her journey to Heaven. Funeral Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2000 at St. Bernadette Church (on Eubank between Indian School and Juan Tabo). Graveside Services immediately following at Fairview Memorial Park Gardens.
