Obituary for Lathrop

Jennie S. Lathrop passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Lovelace Medical Center. She had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, residing in La Vida Llena Retirement Community since 1990. Jennie was born in Fayetteville, AR on July 21, 1912. She married Loyt Lathrop in 1933 while both were attending Kansas State College (now University) in Manhattan, KS. During WWII, Jennie served as a civilian employee of the Army Signal Corp. She first received her amateur radio operator's license in 1937 and was active as W5YSJ until 1988. During that time, she assisted with communications between their families and the scientists and military personnel stationed in Antarctica and Greenland. Jennie made her community better through her service as scout leader, school volunteer, church volunteer and volunteer for many other community activities. She is survived by her husband, Loyt Lathrop; her son, Kenneth; her daughter, Wendy Manzo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her infectious smile and cheerful attitude will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial service will be held for her at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, at Carter Hall, La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima de Oro NE, with Rev. Norton Scrimshire and Rev. Jim Massey officiating.
