Anthony Hugh Smith, a longtime resident of New Mexico, died recently in his home in Cedar Crest. He was born December 5, 1939 in Rochester, NY to Dr. Hugh Allan and Mrs. Aubigne (Cushing) Smith. Anthony"Tony" Smith grew up in the East, mainly in Bangor, Maine. He graduated from Bangor H.S. in 1957, worked for Picker X-Ray Corporation in Boston, and then returned to school at the University of Maine, Orono, graduating in 1965 with a B.S. in Entomology. After graduation, he moved to Las Cruces and entered New Mexico State University, graduating with his M.S. in Entomology in 1967. During this time, he married the former Mary Beatham. He then worked in New Mexico for the U.S. Forest Service and NM Agriculture Department in entomology for 20 years. He had special expertise on the spruce budworm, and attended nationwide conferences as a speaker. He eventually worked for the State of New Mexico as an environmental specialist for over ten years. Tony enjoyed the outdoors very much, having spent a good deal of his life as a research entomologist in the wild. He also enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor pastimes. Tony was well-liked by those he met and worked with. He was great fun to be around and will be sadly missed. Survivors include his ex-wife, Mary Beatham Smith; his step-daughter, Michelle Smith, both of New Mexico; his sisters, Meryl Deane of Pittsfield, MA, Bethany Greig of Clinton, CT, Penny Guyaz of Winthrop, ME, and Holly Bean of Acton, ME; and one brother, Dan Smith of Manassas, VA. A Memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., October 7, 2000, at the Doc Long picnic area in the Sandia Mountains. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your preferred environmental organization or to a children's charity of foundation.
