Obituary for Deberry

Nina L. DeBerry, 83, a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, died Tuesday, October 3, 2000. She is survived by her son, Michael R. Lawrence and wife, JonAnn of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Sally Berry-Hinds of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Daniel Hinds of Albuquerque, Tawna Lawrence of Arlington, VA, Kymberly Lawrence of Houston, TX, Billy Lawrence of Jacksonville, FL, and Kevin Lawrence and wife, Lisa of Cupertino, CA; ex-husband, Harmon DeBerry, to whom she had been married for 33 years; and nieces, Sue Lawrie of Albuquerque and Molly Kruse of San Jose, CA. Mrs. DeBerry was preceded in death by her sons, Daniel L. DeBerry and Dr. Patrick G. Lawrence; and her first husband, Ralph G. Lawrence. Nina was born in Stigler, OK and grew up in Oklahoma City. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Home Economics. Mrs. DeBerry taught two years at Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City before moving to Albuquerque, where she taught at the Harwood Girls School from 1963 to 1973 and then at New Futures High School until her retirement in 1986. For seven years, she served as Summer Program Director for the Y.W.C.A in downtown Albuquerque. Nina was active in her church, St. John's United Methodist Church. She belonged to Hosannah Circle, the Jolly Elders and Prime Timers. Nina was a member of the Albuquerque Association of University Women, the Albuquerque Home Economics Association, Golden Girls for Retired Home Economists, the Albuquerque Association of Educational Retirees and Chi Delta Phi, a fraternity for poets. Nina had written beautiful poetry in the last three years. She was always giving joy to whomever she met. Memorial services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona NE, with Rev. Charlie Price officiating.
