Obituary for Duran

Alfonso Duran Sr., 97, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and tio, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 24, 2000. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Genoveva Montoya and Perfecto Duran in 1904 in Rainesville, New Mexico. Mr. Duran was the last surviving child of eight. He graduated from Menaul High School in 1928 and attended Highland University. He taught school in the counties of San Miguel and Mora. He worked as the Mora County Clerk, and a bookkeeper for the New Mexico State Corporation Commission and for the New Mexico Bureau of Revenue. He retired in 1969. Mr. Duran was an active member of the Tri-county Menaul Alumni Association; Santa Cruz United Methodist Church; a distinguished officer of the Espanola Lions Club and a board member of the Los Rincones Credit Union. In 1934, he married the love of his life, Dolores Chavez. Along with his wife, his is survived by his children, Alfonso Duran Jr., Mae Baker, Lia Guevarra, and Carlos Duran and wife, Dolores Padilla Duran. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Clarissa Duran, Alejandro and Magdalena Coronado, Danielle Duran, Sonrisa, Douglas and Jaylen Case, Arianne and Brelin Carroll, Alicia Duran and Elena Duran; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, July 27, 000, 10:00 a.m., at the Santa Cruz United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Heffner officiating. Interment will follow at the Loma Vista Cemetery in Alcalde. Serving as pallbearers will be Clarissa, Danielle, Alicia and Elena Duran, Sonrisa Case and Arianne Carroll.
