Obituary for Trimble

George Layton Trimble Jr., Lieutenant Colonel, (retired), passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2000. He was born in Adairsville, Georgia in 1921, the son of George L. Trimble and Ruby May Scott Trimble. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth"Dibby" Routh Trimble, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James E. Routh Jr. of Atlanta; two sons, Major (retired) George Layton Trimble III and his wife, Diane and Colonel James Routh Trimble; four grandchildren, George Layton Trimble IV, Christina Yaworsky, Samuel James Trimble and Stephen Joseph Trimble; and two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Justin Trimble. He attended Emory University and received a Master's degree from the University of Southern California. He was a veteran of three wars and spent 29 years in the United States Air Force, the last twenty of which involved nuclear weapons testing, operations and safety. He had the distinction of being the bombardier who dropped more live atomic test weapons during the 1950's than any other person in the USAF. For this he received the Legion of Merit decoration. After retirement from the USAF in 1970, he was employed by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, where he worked for 13 years as a Nuclear Weapons Safety Analyst. He was a Deacon in the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion, Air Force Association, British Air Museum and Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a sports enthusiast, and an ardent Atlanta Braves fan. He loved the great outdoors, camping, fishing and gardening. He also was an amateur genealogist and published a book of his anecdotes from the nuclear testing period of his career. A memorial service will be held at the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. on March 3, 2000. His remains will be interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
