Obituary for Flores

Lt. Col. Manuel"Manny" Flores, Jr., USAF (Ret.), died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Abilene Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. He married Betty J. King in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 11, 1943 and preceded him in death after 42 years of marriage. He is survived by aunts, Helen Newsom and Josie Duran; uncle, Morris Duran; godfather and cousin, L.E. Flores; cousins, Pauline Sanchez and Pita Apodaca; longtime friend and companion, Frances Galloway; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Flores, Sr. and Felonize Duran Flores. Flores was born in Las Vegas, NM, on November 20, 1923, and entered the US Air Force as a private in 1940, retiring in 1964 as lieutenant colonel. He completed his BBA at McMurry University in 1966; his MA at Hardin-Simmons University in 1968; and his Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas in 1973. He began his teaching career in the Air Force. Except for one year in private industry, Flores devoted himself to education after leaving the Air Force. While at McMurry, 1970-78, he was chairman of the Division of Business and Professor of Economics. He served as Professor of Economics and Management at Hardin-Simmons University, and was the first director of graduate studies at the HSU School of Business, retiring in 1990 after ten years association with the institution. He also had been a Professor of Economics at the University of Arkansas for two years. Flores was honored by two Abilene institutions, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry College University, which dedicated yearbooks to him. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Abilene. He was a member of Abilene Rotary Club, past president of Southwest Rotary Club in Abilene, and Alpha Kai National Honor Society. Rosary will be recited Thursday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE with Deacon Bob Lewis reciting. Graveside services will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
