Arthur H. Spiegel, beloved father, grandfather and dear friend, died on June 25, 2000 with all his family with him. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 15, 1908, the second child of Arthur H. Spiegel and Mae O. Spiegel (nee Oberfelder). He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1927 and Dartmouth College in 1931. After graduation he joined a family mail order business, Walter Field and Company. He married Eleanor Friedman on January 1, 1937. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Spiegel, with their three children, moved from Chicago to Albuquerque. From 1949 to 1960, Mr. Spiegel was President of the Arthur Stuart Company. In 1963, he established Arthur H. Spiegel Investments, an investment advisory and counseling business which he sold to Fiduciary Trust International in 1977. From 1977 until his retirement in 1995, he was a consultant with Fiduciary Trust International. Mr. Spiegel was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor, the mother of their three children, who died in 1968. His second wife, Elizabeth Mayer, whom he married in 1970, died in 1997. Mr. Spiegel is survived by his loving and devoted children and grandchildren, his oldest son, Arthur H. Spiegel III, his wife, Pollock, their children, Julia M. Spiegel, her husband, Bernard Lunn, Adam Spiegel (Spike Jonze), his wife, Sofia Coppola and Samuel J. Spiegel; his daughter, Margaret (Marnie) Collister, her husband, Douglas H. Collister, their children, Douglas A. Collister, Eleanor (Ellie) Collister Garcia, her husband, Toby Garcia; his youngest son, Joseph (Jeff) Spiegel, his wife, Katie Gardner, their children, Jesse Spiegel, Ben Spiegel and Suzanne Spiegel. In addition, Mr. Spiegel is also survived by the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from his second marriage to Elizabeth. Her three daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Gordon Winkler, Judy and Bob Barnet, Elizabeth Buchannek and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his dedicated friend of 47 years, Ruby Hooker. Mr. Spiegel was blessed with enduring optimism throughout his long and productive life, and he profoundly influenced and helped many individuals and organizations in Albuquerque and throughout the country. He deeply loved and encouraged his children and grandchildren and set a wonderful example for them to follow through his many philanthropic activities. He gave generously of his time, energy and finances to a wide variety of causes and interests. Some of his many interests are reflected in the list of the following organizations he helped and the awards he was accorded. He was a member of the Presbyterian Hospital Board of Directors, from 1956-currently Emeritus; Founder and first President of the New Mexico Council on Crime and Delinquency in 1962, continued to serve on Board of Directors, Chairman 1962-1964; Campaign Chairman of the Albuquerque United Fund during the successful 1962 Fund Drive. (United Way of Greater Albuquerque); Served two years, 1963-1964, as President of the Albuquerque United Fund; Received Citation for Distinguished Service from the New Mexico Chapter Public Relations Society of America-1968; Founding member of Presbyterian Hospital Center Foundation and Vice Chairman in 1968; Board Member June Music Festival, 1968-1984, President 1968, Chairman 1975-1984; Presbyterian Hospital Board Vice Chairman and Executive Committee member, 1969-1978; Santa Fe Opera Board of Directors, 1968-1979; Received Navajo Community College Daa-jo Baaii Days Award for outstanding service to Navajo Community College-1971; Executive Committee of the Governor's Prayer Breakfast, Chairman, 1971-1994; Instrumental in establishing Governor's Organized Crime Prevention Commission in 1972; Chairman 1972-1977; Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Board Member 1973-1976; Principal fundraiser for the Cultural Center; National Ghost Ranch Foundation Board Member, Treasurer, 1973-1983; Chairman of the Marion K. VanDevanter Fund Drive, for Presbyterian Hospital, to build a new extended care facility for the elderly, raising over $1,300,000, 1978-1979; Received the National Conference of Christians and Jews Award-1978; Received the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award-1979; Received the Jefferson Day Award-1979; Received the Law Day Liberty Bell Award-1981; Received the National Jewish Hospital and National Asthma Center Humanitarian Award-1982; Inducted into the Albuquerque Senior Citizens Hall of Fame-1984; Board Member of the National Jewish Hospital and National Asthma Center, 1984-1996; Symphony Honoring both Mr. and Mrs. Spiegel by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra-1986; Honored with Silver Anniversary dedication by the New Mexico Council on Crime & Delinquency-1987; Founding Board Member and Treasurer of the Rio Grande Institute (later changed name to the Santa Fe Institute); Received Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation's 20th Award for Excellence-1988; Helped organize and was major fundraiser for the National History Museum; Board Member of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and tireless fundraiser for the Symphony over many years; Received Outstanding Philanthropist Award for the State of New Mexico-1992; Received Lifetime Achievement Award from National Jewish Center for Immunology & Respiratory-1997; Received Special Grant Award from the Albuquerque Community Foundation to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in celebration of 90th Birthday and in appreciation of philanthropic contributions to the community-1998; Honored by the New Mexico Council on Crime and Delinquency for leadership-1999. Mr. Spiegel will be deeply missed by his family and the many individuals and organizations he helped and so greatly influenced. However, his many good deeds and wonderful memories will endure and inspire all of those that knew him.
